Afghanistan Program

CPI has provided victim assistance (VA) programming in direct support of international mine action activities in Afghanistan since 2007. The organization currently implements 25 victim assistance projects in 19 provinces that together serve over 80,000 beneficiaries nationwide.

CPI provides its services through a network of pre-qualified Afghan implementing partners (IPs). The organization currently works with 11 IPs to design and deliver programming that address six areas of priority identified in the Afghan National Disability Action Plan (ANDAP). Referred to collectively as the pillars of victim assistance, these include:

1. Data Collection (to understand the extent of the challenge at the individual- and community-level)
2. Medical Care (emergency and on-going medical care; special therapeutic settings and services)
3. Physical rehabilitation (physical therapy, assistive aides, mobility aides, orthotics, and prosthetics)
4. Psychological Support and Social Rehabilitation (peer support, counseling, and case management)
5. Economic Reintegration (vocational training specific to local contexts, markets, individual desires)
6. Advocacy (enacting and enforcing laws; identifying issues concerning disability and human rights)

CPI has since added a seventh pillar, physical accessibility, to its list of priorities. Work within this area has been especially gratifying as CPI works to make hundreds of key buildings (clinics, schools, markets, government offices) accessible to people with disabilities for the very first time.
