Giant Leap For Clear Path Athletes

DONG HA, Vietnam – Landmine survivors sponsored by Clear Path International raked in eight medals during a big central Vietnam athletics event this spring. The 17 competitors, all disabled by accidental landmine or bomb explosions, scored four gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal. Five CPI competitors won other prizes.
They were among 250 athletes at the sports event organized for persons with disabilities by the Quang Tri Sports Department and the Quang Tri Sports Club. The three-day competition, which featured 11 sports from table tennis to javelin throwing, drew more than 4,000 spectators from all over the province.
The athletes whose participation Clear Path sponsored are all beneficiaries of the organization’s medical and social service program for landmine survivors. At this event, they shined, taking a significant number of medals of the 62-medal competition.
Le Thi Hoai Phuong, 27, from Vinh Linh, who lost her leg in an explosion, took three gold medals in the long jump, and the 100-meter and 200-meter athletics. Ho Van Uoc, 26, from Dakrong, who lost his arm in a bomb accident, won the gold medal for the male long jump.
Nguyen Thanh Giang, 16, from Trieu Phong, who lost an arm and an eye, won silver in the long jump. Nguyen The Nghia, 21, from Vinh Linh, won the silver and bronze in the 100-meter and 200-meter athletics. Nguyen Viet Ai, 37, from Gio Linh, who lost a leg, won silver in the 100-meter athletics.
