One Child Killed in Central Vietnam by Cluster Bomb Others Injured
Gio Linh district, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam- On Feb 3rd , 2005, a group of 5th grade children were playing on a sand pile in their neighborhood when a cluster bomb hidden in the sand exploded. One boy was killed on spot and another 3three were injured. Two out of the three received shrapnel in the face and required further hospitalization. Another was only slightly injured.
In a separate incident on February 1, an 18 year-old boy in Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province was hoeing land in his garden when he hit an unknown piece of ordnance He lost one finger and other two fingers were crushed on his other hand. He is now in the district health center for treatment.
Although the Vietnam War ended nearly 30 years ago, bombs that remain in the ground still regularly claim lives and limbs. Since the war ended in 1975, nearly 40,000 Vietnamese have been killed by leftover ordnance.
