Clear Path International
Removing Obstacles that Stand in the Way of the Health, Safety, and Development of Children and their Families

Dr. Joan Widdifield
Mental Health and PTSD Advisor

Dr. Joan Widdifield became a special advisor to Clear Path International in 2001. She earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology with honors in 1991 from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She began working in clinical psychology settings in 1982. Joan has worked in inpatient, outpatient, day treatment and home visits in Chicago, San Francisco, and Boulder. When she noticed that many of her clients had experienced trauma, she developed an interest in psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Joan developed a career-long interest in cross-cultural issues when, as a 20-year-old Meredith College student, she was chosen as the Research Triangle (NC) Community Ambassador to India with The Experiment in International Living (EIL). EIL has the motto, "Peace Through Understanding." This opportunity affected her views of the world, and continues to do so.

Joan counsels uxo (unexploded ordnance) victims and their families in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand (Burmese refugees), advises Clear Path on psychological trauma issues, and provides training seminars to staff, doctors, and other professionals assisting bomb survivors. Joan lives in Carrboro, North Carolina.
