COMPASS: See What Happens When Conservatives Fight?

June 28th, 2022

Good afternoon from Capitol Hill, where yesterday the Supreme Court ruled again in favor of the sanity and the Constitution with an historic victory for religious liberty.

This comes as the DC Swamp is still reeling from Friday’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade and 49 years of judicial tyranny.

Cable news spent the weekend letting leading Democrats and political journalists (but I repeat myself!) to melt down over the idea that the American people should set abortion policy in this country. And of course, the woke mob on social media began looking more and more like a real mob.

But while we rightfully celebrate a generational victory for life, pro-life lawmakers and activists are already pivoting to the next phase of the crusade to protect the unborn.

Several states already had “trigger laws” on the books, banning abortion in the event of Roe ever being overturned. Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt issued a formal opinion declaring the practice outlawed in his state.

Now the fight turns to state legislatures and to Congress. It is exactly for these types of fights that CPI launched the State Freedom Caucus Network last year, with 6 Freedom Caucuses launched in Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Illinois, Nevada, and just this weekend in South Dakota.

Different sides of the issue and different venues will require different tactics and time horizons. But the goal of a now more multifaceted pro-life movement must remain the same: ending the evil practice of child sacrifice once and for all.

And in this, the most important lesson conservatives can take from the Dobbs victory is that we only win when we fight, even when the odds look bleak.

It’s telling that the Dobbs decision was written by Justice Samuel Alito. Alito, you may remember, is only on the Court because pro-life staffers and activists rebelled against President George W. Bush’s initial plan to appoint his lawyer, Harriet Miers, to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Establishment Republicans at the time wanted to rally round the president; principled conservatives demanded a better judge, and got one.

The other great turning point in the fight to overturn Roe was the pro-life movement’s partnership with President Donald Trump, who promised to choose Supreme Court justices from a published list of excellent conservative options. All three of Trump’s appointees – Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett – voted to overturn Roe, the only president in history to bat 1.000 on this most critical of issues.

This is why the Left attacks principled conservative fighters so viciously: because they know we are effective. The Left treats John Roberts the same way they treat liberal, establishment politicians: with kid gloves.

Actual conservatives – like Clarence and Ginni Thomas or the House Freedom Caucus and Senate conservatives– they smear relentlessly.

The courage these constitutional Supreme Court justices have showed in the last week – overturning Roe, affirming concealed carry, and protecting religious liberty on public property – should serve as a model for conservative policymakers going forward.

The Left is not going to surrender its stranglehold on elite institutions, and the narratives the media concocts to protect it. But the American people will rally to conservatives willing to take on the woke Establishment – and freedom, justice, and national flourishing are worth the fight.

One More Thing

Knowing them, they would never seek attention, but I want to give a special thanks to CPI leaders Jim DeMint and Mark Meadows for their roles in helping the eventual overturn of Roe v. Wade. Jim met with then candidate Trump in 2016 and promised to help create a list of conservative judges, and Mark was WH Chief of Staff during the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett. Both have fought for the cause of life and so many other issues over the years, and have the battle scars to show for it. We at CPI and thankful for their, and so many others efforts to bring us to this day of victory for life and liberty!
